Stones were the dwelling places of the gods and were used largely unchanged in building supports under pillars to keep them from rotting in a wet climate. Stones with special shapes were prized in the garden, and hollowed-out stones were used for basins outside as well as other devices for working, grinding, and cooking inside the house as well as out. Man cleverly, sensitively, diplomatically followed the dictates of nature and used the stones he found in the way nature suggested.

Bamboo was the most flexible country resource, the one that most did what man asked. It is one of the great pillars of Japanese country life. Its strength, flexibility, and the fact that it replenishes itself, makes it suitable for practically any task. From walls and ceilings, to tools for working and eating, to baskets and tea whisks, there is no country house that can function without bamboo. It was the all-purpose material-supplanted now by plastic-without which people could not have survived. And it was part of the nature of survival that every man and woman had basic skills for crafting bamboo.
